PostNL’s 22nd parcel sorting centre in the Netherlands is now fully operational. Between 70,000 and 110,000 parcels are processed each day in this new, sustainable 6,600m2 building on Joan Muyskenweg in Amsterdam. This year, PostNL opened three new parcel sorting centres in the Netherlands to optimise the delivery process for the Netherlands and Belgium in the growing parcel market. Amsterdam is the third and last opening of the year and forms an important part of PostNL's preparations to process the big amount of parcels expected in December. In addition to opening these new locations, PostNL will be hiring extra staff to work in Amsterdam or at one of the other sorting centres in the Netherlands.

Sustainable building

The new sorting centre on Joan Muyskenweg has an Outstanding BREEAM certification, a quality label for the most sustainable buildings with minimal environmental impact. The building does not utilise gas and investments have been made in sustainable materials and equipment (including heat recovery systems and LED lighting). The solar panels on the roof generate 40% of the electricity needed to sort all parcels at this location. Some of the parcels from this sustainable sorting centre will be delivered completely emission-free using one of the fifteen new electric vans. The building has been specially equipped with smart charging infrastructure for charging the vans. By 2025, PostNL is aiming for completely CO₂-free post and parcel delivery in 25 city centres and an emission free last mile in the Benelux in 2030.

This new PostNL location in Amsterdam is part of a network of 22 parcel sorting centres in the Netherlands and six locations in Belgium. From these locations, the parcel delivery staff set off to deliver parcels seven days a week across the Netherlands and Belgium. The location in Amsterdam employs approximately 400 people in the region. In close cooperation with the municipalities of Ouder-Amstel and Amsterdam, more than 20 people who are distanced from the labour market are also employed here.

Liesbeth Kaashoek, Director of Parcels & Logistics at PostNL: "With the opening of this parcel sorting centre in Amsterdam, we are responding to the growth of e-commerce and we are investing in the optimisation of our parcel and logistics infrastructure. In 2018, we have added three beautiful sustainable locations to our network and hired 300 staff. In 2019, we expect to open at least three new parcel sorting centres and hire even more extra staff. I am proud that we can also offer employment to people who are distanced from the labour market, both in Amsterdam and at 19 of our sorting centres in total."
