In order to achieve the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement, e-vehicles are likely to be a key characteristic of the vehicle fleet of the future. Recognising this, Austrian Post strives to be a national trailblazer in green logistics and has implemented numerous measures including the “CO2 NEUTRAL DELIVERY” initiative. This programme, in operation since 2011, means all mail items within Austria have been delivered in a CO2-neutral manner.
The initiative consists of three synchronized steps:
- Efficiency increases in the vehicle fleet and buildings
- Alternative technologies (using renewable energy and e-mobility)
- Compensation for remaining emissions
With about 1,450 electric vehicles, Austrian Post has long boasted the largest e-vehicle fleet in Austria, featuring 613 electric bicycles, 370 e-mopeds, six e-powered cars and 441 e-transporters.
The e-fleet is mainly deployed in densely populated areas, such as Vienna as well as provincial and district capitals. As a result, 98% of letter and direct mail deliveries to private customers in Vienna, Austria’s capital city, are already “green”. The associated reduction of local air pollution and noise levels improves the quality of life for many residents.
For this project, Austrian Post has partnered with the Climate and Energy Fund of the Austrian Federal Government and the “klima:aktiv mobil” programme of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management. This partnership supports Austrian Post’s regional “E-Mobility Post” initiative with both funding and knowledge sharing in its efforts to further expand its e-vehicle fleet.
