The green fleet enables bpost to drastically reduce carbon and fine particle emissions from the delivery of letters and parcels, and so improve air quality in the centre of Bruges. It also cuts the number of journeys made in the city. Addressees are also able to contribute to lowering the carbon footprint by having parcels delivered to their preferred pick-up point near to them. This ensures first-time delivery without the need for extra journeys.
An accepted concept, sustainable ambitions
bpost aims to play a leading role in sustainable city logistics. In Belgium, bpost has set itself the target of zero-emission deliveries in 25 large cities by 2025, powered by a green fleet of electric vehicles and cargo bikes, combined with a dense network of pick-up points (including post offices, post points, parcel points and parcel lockers). The cities of Mechelen, Leuven, Namur, Mons and Louvain-la-Neuve have already been transformed into full-fledged ecozones. New full-fledged ecozones will be added to that list. At the same time, bpost continues to take action to make its fleet more sustainable. bpost has full control over this transition and zero-carbon emission delivery is the first step towards an ecozone.
“We launched our climate plan for Bruges back in the spring,” says mayor Dirk De fauw. This climate plan sets out our ambition to cut carbon emissions in our city in half by 2030. We are delighted that bpost is setting the right example as a large company. At the city council we can only applaud this type of initiative.”
